Kim’s Vietnam Blog
Off I trek again! This time to the mesmerising land of Vietnam—a country bursting with rich history, jaw-dropping landscapes, and some of the best food I have ever tasted. From bustling cities to serene bays, Vietnam had me hooked from the moment I arrived! This was my ninth visit since 2008, and each time, I discover something new to love.
Hanoi – A City of Chaos and Charm
First stop, Hanoi, the beating heart of Vietnam. It’s a city that’s alive with energy—motorbikes whizzing past in every direction, street vendors calling out, and the scent of pho filling the air. The Old Quarter was a labyrinth of narrow streets and hidden gems, where every turn led to something unexpected.
I travelled with my friend, and on our first evening, we did an amazing food walking tour through the bustling streets of Hanoi. From sizzling banh xeo to mouthwatering bun cha, every bite was a flavour explosion. We even tried the famous egg coffee—rich, creamy, and utterly delicious!
The next day, I started with a steaming bowl of pho —simple, delicious, and packed with flavour. Then, we wandered around Hoan Kiem Lake, visited the Temple of Literature, and soaked in the city’s deep-rooted history. In the evening, a trip to the famous Train Street, where we enjoyed an iced coffee just inches from a passing train. What a thrill!
Ha Long Bay – A Dreamlike Escape
After the whirlwind of Hanoi, it was time for some serenity. Ha Long Bay was breathtaking beyond words—a world of emerald waters, towering limestone cliffs, and misty horizons. We hopped on a 2-day cruise and sailed through this UNESCO wonder, stopping to explore hidden caves, kayak through crystal-clear waters, and visit a floating fishing village.
Sunset on the deck was pure magic. As the sky turned pink and gold, we just sat there, taking it all in with a cocktail. One of those moments that stays with you forever.
Ba Na Hills – A Fairytale in the Clouds
On this trip, we also stayed overnight at the Ba Na Hills Hotel, and wow—what an experience! The 20-minute cable car ride to the top was absolutely breathtaking, offering stunning views over the lush mountains and misty valleys. Once at the top, we explored the famous Golden Hands Bridge, a surreal sight with its massive stone hands cradling a golden walkway. The floral gardens were another highlight, bursting with colour and beautifully designed landscapes. Staying overnight allowed us to enjoy the area without the daytime crowds—a truly magical experience!
Hoi An – Lanterns, Markets, and Pure Magic
Next up, Hoi An—easily one of the most beautiful towns I’ve ever seen and my happiest place in the world. The ancient town is like stepping into a postcard: yellow-walled buildings, colorful lanterns swaying in the breeze, and charming little streets lined with tailor shops and cafés.
By day, we explored the vibrant markets and had custom outfits made (because when in Hoi An, you have to get something tailored!). We also attended a cooking school, where we learned to make fresh spring rolls, cao lau, and the best Vietnamese pancakes. By night, we took a boat ride along the Thu Bon River, setting a lantern afloat and making a wish. The whole town lights up like a fairytale.
And the food? Oh my goodness! We feasted on Cao Lau (a Hoi An specialty noodle dish), banh mi, and crispy white rose dumplings. Every bite was heavenly.
Ho Chi Minh City – A Fast-Paced Adventure
From the peaceful charm of Hoi An to the non-stop energy of Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon). This city is fast, loud, and absolutely electrifying.
We kicked off our stay with a half-day Vespa tour, zipping through the city’s chaotic streets, exploring hidden alleyways, and experiencing Saigon like a local. It was exhilarating!
The next day, we visited the War Remnants Museum, a sobering yet essential experience to understand Vietnam’s history. Then, we took a trip to the Cu Chi Tunnels, crawling through the narrow, dark tunnels once used during the war—an eye-opening and humbling experience.
For a change of pace, we spent an entire day on a Mekong Delta tour, floating down the river, visiting local villages, and tasting fresh coconut candy and honey tea. It was a beautiful, peaceful escape from the city’s fast pace and gave us a glimpse into rural Vietnamese life.
At night, we embraced the chaos of Bui Vien Street, where bars, music, and street performances created an atmosphere like no other. And of course, we couldn’t leave without indulging in a bowl of bun thit nuong (grilled pork with vermicelli noodles)—flavour-packed and utterly delicious.
Travel Tips
Try the salted coffee. It’s to die for! A perfect balance of sweet, creamy, and salty—it’s unlike anything you’ve ever had.
Haggle hard in the markets. It’s a tradition! Bartering is all part of the fun, so don’t be shy—aim for at least half the asking price and enjoy the banter.
Tailoring in Hoi An? Come prepared! If you want something custom-made, bring a favourite piece of clothing that fits you well and have it copied. I always have a list of what I want made because the options can be overwhelming. I even bring fabric from home for a truly special outfit!
